We had such awesome 2 nights here and probably one of the better stay we had throughout our 9 days in Hokkaido so I thought I would give this place a review since I had such a tough time looking for one and hopefully, be able to help those budget conscious you.

We left Obihiro feeling so energised after our visit from the Unkai Terrace (read more here) and after a really long and scenic drive, we finally arrived at Lake Akan. It wasn't exactly easy to find our accommodation even though we had a in built GPS in the car but we did eventually!

If you see this, then you're at the right place.

During the planning while looking for a accommodation, we came across many hotels to choose from but they are way too expensive and not within our budget.

This is how the front of the minshuku looks like. The place is owned by an elderly couple and they are really nice people and tried conversing with us even though they only know limited english words. They have a shop downstairs that sells all kinds of akan souvenirs and you get 10% off any purchase if you're staying here!

If you're driving here, not to worry, they do have parking space behind their shop which they will direct you to.

Upon payment, you will be asked to remove your shoes and a pair of slippers will be provided for walking inside the place although sometimes I do not wear them because it's very difficult and slippery to walk in them especially when going up the stairs.

The elderly lady will then bring you on a tour to show you the room, toilets and bathrooms.

Everything that you think you need will be provided

Besides being affordable, another reason for choosing this place is being able to experience an authentic Japanese room which will be the only time for us throughout our 2 weeks in Japan. We had to lay out the futons every night and was so embarrassed to learn that the elderly lady actually kept our messy room for us in the morning when we went out. She also helped changed our towels everyday.

Picture above is the female bathroom. Although it's stated shared bathroom, you can lock the door if you are uncomfortable bathing with other people. They do have a small onsen in the bathroom as well.

There were many things to consider when choosing this place because there wasn't much review and we're not sure how trustable it is and what if they cancelled on us last minute. But I can say I really love this place and didn't regret choosing it.
